Pet owners should also be aware of situations that increase the probability of pets becoming lost. Non-routine events, like having visitors or hosting a party, increase the risk of a pet being inadvertently let outside. Significant events, like a move, can confuse and disorient your pet. Fully focused on the move, your guard may be down and your disoriented pet may escape into unfamiliar surroundings. During any of these situations the pet owner must be exceedingly diligent to prevent a lost pet. Simple measures, like confining your pet during a party or on the day of the move, are very effective.
Resources to Assist You in Finding a Lost Pet
In the event of your pet becoming lost there are resources available to assist you in finding your pet. Although the Humane Society is there to assist you in any way possible, the primary responsibility for finding your pet remains yours. Quick action by you increases the probability of your pet being found and decreases the risk that your pet endures while at large. Pets unclaimed within five days are considered abandoned!
